Eco-Festival Resort

Programme: Hospitality

Location: Akwidaa, Ghana

Project Year (Design): 2020

Located in the outskirts of Akwidaa in the Western Region of Ghana along the coast, the project site celebrates its peculiar beachfronts and rich inland vegetation with a vibrant youthful fishing and farming community. The project is designed to promote cultural and intellectual exchange through hospitability and recreation – highlighting ecological sustainability.

The facility is designed to serve as a meeting point for creatives and like minds to retreat and be inspired while embedding themselves culturally through communal activities and everyday lifestyle. Inspired by the local lifestyle and building culture, the design organizes its shelters in the clusters and encourages guests to “get out of their shells” and spend time in nature. The central part of the site is allocated as a creativity garden that plays a versatile role of hosting diverse activities, and a dome structure with a stage for performing arts. The project also offers ample open areas for camping, as a way of offering guests an alternative experience of nature.

The organic brick-shell structures embed themselves in the natural vegetation of the site strategically positioned for each shelter to have an unobstructed experience of the Atlantic Ocean. The brick-shell structure utilizes several eco-friendly materials that borrows from the local “atakpame” technique of layering earth and split bamboo.
